Opening Day Results in Premier League

First Games in New Season Bring Wins for Arsenal, Hull and Blackburn

The opening day scores brought victory for Hull City in their first ever Premier League game while Liverpool, West Ham and Middlesbrough also enjoyed success.

The results from the opening day games in the Premier League brought victories for Arsenal, Hull City, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United and Middlesbrough.

Arsenal 1 West Bromwich Albion 0

Arsenal started the new Premier League season with a single goal win over newly promoted West Bromwich Albion. The goal was scored after four minutes by Samir Nasri who was making his debut.

West Ham United 2 Wigan Athletic 1

Two early first half goals secured victory for West Ham United over Wigan Athletic at Upton Park. Dean Ashdown scored twice within the first ten minutes and although Wigan scored early in the second half through Amr Zaki, West Ham took the points.

Hull City 2 Fulham 1

Newly promoted Hull City scored their first ever Premier League goals and secured their first win against Fulham. They had to come from a goal down after Seol Ki-Hyeon put Fulham ahead with a header after eight minutes. However, new signing Geovanni equalised before half-time and substitute Caleb Folan scored the second half winner with nine minutes remaining.

Bolton Wanderers 3 Stoke City 1

The other promoted side, Stoke City were three down at Bolton by half-time after Gretar Steinsson, Kevin Davies and Johan Elmanderscored during the last fifteen minutes of the half. Stoke could only manage a last minute consolation goal when substitute Ricardo Fuller scored.

Everton 2 Blackburn Rovers 3

Blackburn Rovers’ new manager, Paul Ince, is celebrating a first day victory at Everton. David Dunn gave the visitors the lead midway through the first half only for Everton to equalise in added time at the end of the first half through Mikel Arteta. Blackburn then went behind midway through the half when Yakubu scored but they equalised through Roque Santa Cruz two minutes later and then Andre Ooijer scored a late winner in added time.

Middlesbrough 2 Tottenham Hotspur 1

Middlesbrough enjoyed a win over Tottenham Hotspur. Two goals in the second half from defender David Wheater who had a first half goal disallowed and the former Spurs’ striker Mido put them on course for victory while Spurs’ consolation goal was an own goal by Robert Huth in added time. Dimitar Berbatov started the game on the bench further fuelling speculation that he is about to leave the club.

Sunderland 0 Liverpool 1

Liverpool got their season off to the best possible start with a win at Sunderland through a late goal scored by Fernando Torres. Sunderland put in a very credible performance and didn’t deserve to lose.
